1. Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a common foot problem that usually occurs after an injury to the foot. However, injuries are not the only way to end up with plantar fasciitis. The fascia, or the connective tissue at the bottom of the foot, gets inflamed and can cause severe pain in the foot. The pain often travels up the heel and into the leg. Some people experience this issue due to overuse, stress, or wearing the wrong type of shoes for your feet. Common treatments include icing, elevating, anti-inflammatory drugs and wearing the right shoes.
2. Athlete’s Foot
You don’t have to be an athlete to suffer from Athlete’s Foot. This common foot problem is a fungal issue and leaves a red, scaly, itchy rash on the sides of your feet. Many people get Athlete’s Foot at swimming pools, gyms, or locker rooms, where bare feet come into contact with the virus.
Over-the-counter anti-fungal creams usually help solve this issue. Podiatrists can prescribe other alternatives and may recommend other tips to prevent further issues if necessary. Washing your feet frequently with warm, soapy water and keeping dry, clean feet can also reduce your risk.
3. Bunions
If you have a painful protrusion on the side of your big toe, you may suffer from a bunion. Bunions are abnormal foot issues that occur when your foot bone leans into your toes rather than straight. They can get worse over time if left untreated.
Wearing supportive arches in your shoes can help alleviate pain and coax the bones back into correct alignment. Some people use tape on their toes to correct the bones and help with pain.
4. Diabetic Neuropathy
People with diabetes often suffer from diabetic neuropathy in their feet. As they experience changes in their blood sugar levels, high levels can cause nerve damage, especially in the feet. If you experience numbness or tingling in your feet, it’s important to see a doctor right away.
Although doctors cannot reverse nerve damage in the feet, they can help you create a treatment plan to prevent further damage. Keeping your feet clean, your nails trimmed, and eating well can prevent diabetic neuropathy.
5. Heel Spurs
Heel spurs, like plantar fasciitis, occur on and around the heel. They usually happen because of some stress on the area or from wearing incorrect shoes for your feet. People who deal with arthritis or excessive weight can also suffer from heel spurs.
Heel spurs are a buildup of calcium in the heel bone that causes inflammation and pain to the area. Cold packs, anti-inflammatory shots, and rest are common ways to treat the issue. A doctor can diagnose the issue through evaluation and imaging.
